Iowa State Representative Ashley Hinson Visits REM Iowa Day Programs

REM Iowa recently welcomed state Representative Ashley Hinson of Iowa’s 67th House District to two of its Day Programs in Hiawatha. Rep. Hinson met with staff to learn about REM Iowa’s services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She also honored individuals and staff present with a violin performance during both visits.

The Hiawatha location operates a Day Habilitation program, which offers a nurturing social environment where adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities can make friends and be active in the community. During her visit, Rep. Hinson toured the location and met some of the individuals served by the program. Staff educated her about the services and supports provided by the program, including independent living skill development, recreational activities and prevocational supports for individuals who want to develop work skills.

Staff also shared with Rep. Hinson about the needs of individuals with disabilities and how programs such as Day Habilitation enhance the lives of the people they serve through personalized support tailored to each individual’s needs and goals.

“It was an honor to welcome Representative Hinson and share with her our mission to improve quality of life for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities,” said Amy Cady, Area Director for REM Iowa. “We hope she now has a fuller understanding of the needs of the individuals we serve and how we support them.”

REM Iowa is a leading provider of services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, brain injury and other complex challenges. Personalized services are provided through a range of community-based programs, including Host Homes group homes, Day Programs and mental health services.
