Gazette.Net Chronicles Dogs’ Impact on Injured Veterans

NeuroRestorative—a partner of The MENTOR Network—had its services for veterans & military service members highlighted in a story on Gazette.Net about Warrior Canine Connection, a dog training therapy organization in Maryland. The story leads with a focus on Cpl. Justin Bunce, who is a NeuroRestorative participant, and his preference for using dogs for therapy exercises instead of traditional methods.

Warrior Canine Connection uses dogs for therapy and teaches service members to train service dogs that will assist veterans. According to the story, the simple act of brushing a dog uses the same motion as exercises that are supposed to help someone like Bunce regain his mobility. Bunce lost mobility in his left side after being injured in service by an improvised explosive device while deployed as a Marine in Iraq.

“There’s just a certain therapy that dogs can provide that people can’t,” NeuroRestorative life skills trainer Katie Gorman told the Gazette.
