Cathy Morris was awarded Special Olympics Minnesota’s Outstanding Spirit Award for 2013. As a direct support professional with REM Minnesota, a partner of The MENTOR Network, Cathy has made helping others her life’s work. She began volunteering for Special Olympics seven years ago after hearing from a friend that the local teams needed help. She currently oversees nearly 700 Special Olympics athletes—including some individuals served by REM Minnesota—as Southwestern Minnesota’s Administration Coordinator for areas six and eight and as the Head of Delegation for Redwood Falls. In her roles, Cathy helps to ensure athletes and coaches have everything they need for success.
A statement from the Special Olympics Minnesota in the Redwood Falls Gazette applauded Cathy for “her positive attitude and drive to provide athletes opportunities to showcase their abilities.” The statement went on to read, “Cathy is always prepared to take on projects that will benefit Special Olympics. She has a talent for getting others involved in Special Olympics Minnesota, whether it’s volunteering, coaching, competing, or cheering.”
In addition to her work with adult athletes, Cathy has also implemented the first Young Athletes program in the area. The program has had more than 70 children participate. For Cathy, the long hours and hard work are worth it just to see the smiles on the athletes’ faces.
