REM Iowa Developmental Services is pleased to announce the launch of a new decorative coaster product line created by participants in its Hiawatha Day Program. The coasters are created and sold to customers in the community as part of REM Iowa’s job development programming in its Day Programs for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
“The coasters are created from ceramic tiles purchased at our local Habitat for Humanity RESTORE and decorated by the individuals we serve. We are excited to make these products available and the opportunities offered for participants to explore their creativity and develop skills,” says Shay Andersen, Program Director for REM Iowa.
The coasters produced by Hiawatha participants are among a wide range of participant-created items created and sold by REM Iowa Day Programs across the state. Items range from arts and crafts to interior decorations, including greeting cards, wooden wall decorations, and lawn stones. Participants earn a wage for producing the items while developing skills that prepare them for paid employment.
“When a customer requests an item, the individual works with their Direct Service Professional to design the product. This helps them develop skills such as attention to detail, following directions and fine motor skills through tasks such as painting and sanding,” said Sara Drish, Area Director for REM Iowa.
“REM Iowa strives to create new opportunities for the individuals we serve. With the launch of this new product line, we hope to open even more doors as individuals develop the skills and confidence to pursue meaningful work in their communities,” says Lisa Pakkebier, Executive Director of REM Iowa.
Coasters are available for $2.50 each and can be created to the customer’s design specifications. For more information or to place an order, contact Shay Andersen at 319-378-2940 or [email protected]. Visit www.remiowa.com to learn more about the full line of products available.
